Getting Started

All non-profit groups in Nevada have to following the same process in order to become a 501(c)(3) organization.

GETTING STARTED
1 Develop Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws and List of Officers
2 Submit IRS Form SS4 "Request For Employer Identification Number" to the IRS No fee.  Contact info at http://www.irs.gov(877)829-5500 (2,3) IRS Form SS-4
3 File "Articles of Incorporation" with Secretary of State

4 Read IRS Publication 557 IRS Pub 557
AFTER STATE RESPONSE (#3 above)
5 File Annual List of Officers with the Secretary of State.

AFTER LIST OF OFFICERS ACCEPTED BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE (#5)
AND OTHERWISE APPROPRIATE
6 Submit IRS Form 1023 "Application for Recognition of Exemption" to the IRS

7 Submit " Application for Sales/Use Tax Exemption" to the State Dept of Taxation. No fee.  Contact information at http://tax.state.nv.us. APP-02.01
MISCELLANEOUS
8 Eventually, local Friends Organizations may want to consider joining Friends of Libraries, USA (FOLUSA). FOLUSA has a variety of membership types and levels. Complete instructions and contact information is on the web site at http://www.folusa.org

Notes regarding #6 above.
(1) If it is anticipated that gross revenue from ANY AND ALL sources will be over $5,000 for the organization's fiscal year, IRS Form 1023 should be filed at the same time as IRS Form SS4.
(2) You have up to 27 months to file IRS Form 1023; however, it must be filed immediately anytime gross revenue from ANY AND ALL sources is over $5,000 for the organization's fiscal year.
(3) Fees associated with filing IRS Form 1023:
     If gross revenue is under $10,000, fee is $400
     If gross revenue is over $10,000, fee is $850
(4) Annual reporting to the IRS at the end of the corporation fiscal year:  (No fee)
     (A) If gross receipts are under $25,000 file on-line at http://www.irs.gov/EO, search for form 990-N and file on-line.
     (B) If gross receipts are over $25,000 OR if one contribution is over $5000, file form 990 or 990EZ.  Obtain forms on-line.
     (C) Annual reporting is required even if Form 1023 has not yet been submitted or approved.
